سن 695 عیسوی میں طائف کے ثقفی قبیلہ میں پیدا ہونے والے محمد بن قاسم کو بیس سال کی عمر میں عراق کے گورنر سلیمان بن عبد المالک کے حکم پر قتل کر دیا گیا تھا قتل کی وجوہات پر تاہم مؤرخین کا اختلاف ہے مشہور مسلمان تاریخ دان البلاذری نے اپنی کتاب فتوح البلدان میں لکھا ہے کہ اموی خلیفہ ولید بن عبد المالک کے بعد اس کا چھوٹا بھائی سلیمان بن عبد المالک خلیفہ بنا تو اس نے حجاج بن یوسف کے قریب تصور کیے جانے والے لوگوں کو قید کروا دیا محمد بن قاسم حجاج بن یوسف کا چچازاد بھائی اور کچھ روایات کے مطابق اس کا داماد بھی تھا جبکہ محمد بن قاسم ہر الزام یہ تھا کہ اس نے حجاج کے کہنے پر ان تمام علاقوں میں جو اس نے فتح کیئے تھے سلیمان کی جانشینی کے حق کا اعلان کرنے سے انکار کر دیا تھا اس لیے سلیمان نے یزید بن کبشہ کو سندھ کا والی بناکر بھیجا اور اسے حکم دیا کہ محمد بن قاسم کو گرفتار کرکے بھیجو۔ محمد بن قاسم کو گرفتار کرنے کے بعد دمشق بھیج دیا گیا۔

بیت المال کے خزانچی صالح ابن عبدالرحمان نے محمد بن قاسم کو شدید تشدد کا نشانہ اس بات کا بدلہ لینے کے لئے بنایا کہ اس کے بھائی کو حجاج نے پھانسی پر لٹکا دیا تھا سلیمان نے محمد بن قاسم کو واسط شہر جو کہ حجاج بن یوسف نے آباد کرایا تھا  میں قید کروادیا اور پھر اس کے قتل کا حکم بھی جاری کر دیا کچھ رویات کے مطابق جب عمر بن عبدالعزیز کواس بات کا پتہ چلا تو وہ سلیمان کے پاس گئے اور اسے درگزر کرنے کا کہا عمر بن عبدالعزیز کے اصرار پر سلیمان نے قتل کے حکم کی واپسی کا خط لکھ کر عمر بن عبدالعزیز کو دیا لیکن جب وہ واسط پہنچے تو دیکھا لوگ ایک جنازہ اٹھائے آرہے ہیں۔ معلوم کرنے پر پتا چلا کہ یہ محمد بن قاسم کا جنازہ ہے۔ چچ نامہ کے مطابق خلیفہ ولید بن عبدالمالک کے حکم پر محمد بن قسم کو قتل کیا گیا چچ نامہ میں یہ واقعہ تفصیلا درج ہے جس کے مطابق ملتان کی فتح کے بعد کشمیر کی جانب محمد بن قاسم کی پیش قدمی جاری تھی جب ایک دن ایک اونٹ سوار دارالخلافہ کا پروانہ لے کر حاضر ہوا چچ نامہ میں وجہ یہ بیان کی کہ راجہ داہر کے قتل کے بعد اس کی دو کنواری بیٹیاں گرفتار ہو کر آئیں تھیں جنہیں بغداد بھجوا دیا گیا تھا خلیفہ وقت نے غمخواری کی خاطر انہیں حرم سرا کے حوالے کیا تاکہ چار دن آرام کر کے خلوت کے لائق ہوں پھر چند دن بعد خلیفہ کے دل مبارک میں ان کا خیال آیا اور رات کے وقت دونوں کو حاضر ہونے کا حکم دیا جب وہ حاضر ہوئیں تو خلیفہ نے ترجمان کو حکم دیا کہ معلوم کرے کہ بڑی کون ہے تاکہ اسے روک لیا جائے اور اس کی چھوٹی بہن کو کسی دوسرے موقع پر بلایا جائے بڑی نے اپنا نام سریا دیو اور چھوٹی نے پرمل دیو بتایا خلیفہ نے بڑی کو بلا کر چھوٹی کو لے جانے کا کہا اس کے بعد جوں ہی بڑی کو بٹھا کر اس کا منہ کھولا گیا خلیفہ دیکھتے ہی اس کے حسن و جمال پر مفتون ہو گیا اس کی ظالم اداوں نے خلیفہ کے دل سے اس کا صبر چھین لیا اور ازخودرفتہ ہو کر اس نے ہاتھ ڈال کر سریا دیو کو اپنی طرف کھینچا لیکن وہ تلملا کر اٹھ کھڑی ہوئی اور کہنے لگی بادشاہ قائم رہے یہ کنیز بادشاہ کی خلوت کے قابل نہیں ہو سکتی کیونکہ امیر عادل عماد الدین محمد بن قاسم نے پہلے ہمیں تین دن اپنے پاس رکھنے کے بعد خلیفہ کی خدمت میں بھیجا ہے کیا تمہارا یہی دستور ہے؟ یہ خواری بادشاہ کے لئے جائز نہیں ہے خلیفہ نے فورا کاغذ قلم منگوا کر اپنے ہاتھ سے پروانہ لکھا کہ محمد بن قاسم جہاں بھی پہنچا ہو اس پر لازم ہے کہ خود کو کچی کھال میں بند کراکے دارالخلافہ کو واپس ہو۔ جب اودھا پور کے شہر میں یہ فرمان موصول ہوا تو محمد بن قاسم کے کہنے پر اسے کچی کھال میں لپیٹ کر اور صندوق میں رکھ کر دارالخلافہ لے جایا گیا اور راستے میں ہی اس نے جان دے دی صندوق کو جب خلیفہ کے سامنے پیش کیا گیا تو اسے بتایا گیا کہ محمد بن قاسم کو لے آئے ہیں خلیفہ نے پوچھا زندہ یا مردہ تو بتایا گیا کہ راستے میں ہی اس نے جان دے دی تھی توخلیفہ نے راجہ داہر کی بیٹیوں کو حاضر کرنے کا حکم دیا اس وقت خلیفہ کے ہاتھ میں ایک سبز چھڑی تھی جسے وہ محمد بن قاسم کے دانتوں پر پھیرتے ہوئے کہہ رہا تھا کہ آئے راجہ کی بیٹیو دیکھو ہمارا حکم اپنے ماتحتوں پر اس طرح جاری ہے اس لئے سب منتظر اور مطیع رہتے ہیں جیسے ہی ہمارا پیغام اسے قنوج میں ملا ویسے ہی ھمارے حکم پر اس نے اپنی پیاری جان قربان کر دی۔ چچ نامہ کے مطابق دوںوں بہنوں نے خلیفہ کو بتایا کہ محمد بن قاسم نے ان کے ساتھ کوئی دست درازی نہیں کی اور انہوں نے ایسا صرف اپنے باپ کا بدلہ لینے کے لئے کیا تھا تو خلیفہ کو سخت صدمہ ہوا اور شدت افسوس میں اپنی ہتھیلیوں کی پشت کو کاٹنے لگا اور پھر دونوں بہنوں کو دیوار میں چنوانے کا حکم صادر کیا۔
